images and sources

Yesterday's Year 2 studio seminar looked at different terminologies in the relationship between artwork and source material, and the often fine lines  crossed between 'homage', 'referencing', 'appropriation' and the big no-no: plagiarism. The two works above, by Jeff Wall and Manet, featured in the seminar. As a timely coincidence the big kahuna Michael Fried talked recently, at Tate Modern, about his interest in Wall's practice and its relation to painting. Click on Post Title above for link (his observations on Wall come towards the end of the lecture.) Look out for Jean Francois Chevrier too, talking about the notion of 'tableau' in painting, and also key ideas about collage- really worth tuning in to, but you'll need some stamina.
